Nocona Men’s Roughout Leather Belt
Our Nocona men’s roughout leather belt is built from premium full-grain cowhide finished with the suede side out, offering exceptional durability and a distinctly Western aesthetic. Roughout leather resists scratches and scuffs better than smooth-finish hides, making it ideal for daily work wear and outdoor use.
Each belt is cut from a single piece of thick leather and hand-finished at our Texas workshop. The 1½-inch strap width fits standard belt loops and works with interchangeable buckles. We use solid brass hardware throughout for corrosion resistance and long-term reliability.
The natural nap of roughout leather develops character over time as it molds to your body and takes on subtle color variations. Whether you’re pairing it with jeans and boots or adding Western flair to casual wear, this belt offers the same construction quality our customers have trusted since 1925.

What the numbers mean
Roughout leather is full-grain cowhide tanned and finished with the flesh side facing outward, leaving the natural suede texture exposed. This reversal creates a surface that’s more forgiving than smooth leather when it comes to daily wear — scratches and scuffs blend into the nap rather than standing out as marks.
The tanning process for roughout hides preserves the full thickness of the skin, so you get a belt that holds its shape without stretching excessively over time. We use vegetable-tanned leather that firms up as it ages, which means the belt actually becomes more supportive after the first few months of wear.
Measure your waist over the pants or jeans you’ll typically wear with the belt, then add two inches to that measurement for proper fit. The belt should fasten at the middle hole when you first receive it, leaving room to tighten or loosen as needed.
Our roughout belt ships with a removable brass buckle, but the strap works with any standard snap-on buckle system. The snaps are positioned 1½ inches from the belt end, matching industry-standard spacing. If you already own a Nocona buckle from our bullhide or tooled leather collections, you can swap it onto this strap without modification.
Brush the belt weekly with a soft-bristle suede brush to lift the nap and remove embedded dust. Brushing in one direction prevents matting and keeps the texture consistent across the strap.
For water spots or spills, blot immediately with a clean cloth and allow the belt to air-dry away from direct heat. Do not apply leather conditioner or oils to roughout — these products flatten the nap and create dark patches. If the leather feels dry after extended use, a light misting with suede protector spray restores moisture without compromising texture.

Hardware and stitching construction
We use solid brass for the buckle, keeper loop, and snap fasteners — no plated zinc or pot metal that tarnishes or breaks under tension. The brass is tumbled and antiqued to match the rustic character of roughout leather, and it develops a deeper patina as you wear the belt.
Double-row stitching runs the length of the strap using heavy-duty nylon thread that’s UV-resistant and won’t rot from sweat or moisture. The stitch spacing is tight enough to prevent gaps but allows some flex so the belt moves naturally with your body.

What the crews say

Questions about the Nocona roughout leather belt
Use a soft-bristle suede brush to remove dust and dirt, brushing in one direction to maintain the nap. For wet spots, blot with a clean cloth and air-dry away from heat sources. Do not apply leather conditioner or oils, as these flatten the suede texture and cause discoloration. A suede protector spray can be applied lightly if the leather feels dry after extended use.
Roughout leather is full-grain cowhide that holds its shape better than bonded or corrected-grain leathers. You may notice slight relaxation during the first two weeks of wear as the fibers settle, but the belt will not stretch significantly like thin dress belts. Vegetable tanning keeps the leather firm and supportive for years of daily use.
Measure your waist over the pants you’ll wear most often, then add two inches. For example, if your waist measures 34 inches over jeans, order a size 36 belt. The belt should fasten comfortably at the center hole when new, allowing room to adjust as needed.
Yes, the roughout belt uses a standard snap-on buckle system with fasteners positioned 1½ inches from the strap end. You can swap in any Nocona buckle or aftermarket snap-on buckle without tools or modifications. The strap width is 1½ inches, which fits most Western-style buckles.
Roughout leather is full-grain cowhide with the flesh side facing outward, creating a suede-like texture on the exterior. True suede is split from the underside of a hide and is thinner and less durable. Roughout retains the full thickness and strength of the original skin, making it more suitable for belts and work gear than suede.
With regular care, a Nocona roughout belt typically lasts five to ten years of daily wear. The leather develops a worn patina over time but maintains its structural integrity. Replacing the buckle or re-punching holes can extend the belt’s lifespan even further.
The natural nap will darken slightly in high-contact areas like the buckle holes and where your hands grip the strap. This is a normal part of the leather aging process and adds character rather than detracting from appearance. Exposure to direct sunlight over months can lighten the color gradually, but the texture remains intact.
